Maura Dougherty Maura Dougherty is a founding partner of Envision Communications, a consulting firm specializing in paid advertising and earned media for Democratic candidates and progressive organizations. Dougherty brings a dozen years of experience in media relations, campaign management, direct mail and speechwriting to the firm.
In the 2008 cycle, Dougherty served as the media consultant and lead strategist for Congresswoman Betsy Markey (CO-04) and state Senator Wendy Davis in Texas, both of whom defeated Republican incumbents, and Congressman Martin Heinrich (NM-01), who prevailed in a Republican open seat. With her partners, she also aided in Mark Schauer’s victory in MI-07, John Boccieri's victory in OH-16, Jason Altmire's landslide re-election effort in PA-04, and worked with several state legislatures to regain or increase their Democratic majorities.
Prior to forming Envision Communications, Dougherty was Senior Vice President at Fenn Communications Group. She served as media consultant and strategist for the winning campaigns of Congresswoman Betty Sutton (OH-13), Congressman Phil Hare (IL-17), Congressman Charlie Wilson (OH-06) and Congressman Tim Bishop (NY-01), as well as the Michigan Senate Democratic Caucus and numerous other clients.
In the 2002 and 2004 cycles, Dougherty served as Associate Creative Director at Mission Control, a leading direct mail firm, where she created award-winning direct mail for Delaware Governor Ruth Ann Minner’s re-election bid and the upset victories of Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz (PA-13) and Congresswoman Melissa Bean (IL-08), among others. In 2004, her work earned the firm three First Place "Pollie" awards.
Prior to her consulting work, Dougherty served as Press Secretary for US Senator Chuck Schumer, handling all of the Senator's New York State communications and traveling extensively across the state with him. In 1998, she was Communications Director for Tom Vilsack’s upset win in the Democratic Primary for governor in Iowa.
Using her expertise in communications, strategy and media relations, Dougherty has conducted candidate and staff trainings for numerous progressive organizations. In December of 2008 she traveled to Erbil, Iraq, where she worked with the National Democratic Institute, conducting trainings for women candidates in advance of the country's landmark Provincial Council elections in January 2009.
